Aesthetic Crown Lengthening
WHAT IS AESTHETIC CROWN LENGTHENING?
Aesthetic crown lengthening is an oral surgical procedure designed to improve both the health and appearance of your smile. While the term "crown lengthening" may imply that it makes the tooth longer, a more accurate description would be "crown exposure," as it involves removing gum tissue to reveal more of the tooth's enamel. This procedure can be beneficial for aesthetic purposes, especially if you have a "gummy" smile. Additionally, it may be necessary when insufficient tooth structure is visible to support a filling, crown, or other restoration. For further details, please schedule an appointment at Cedar House Family Dentistry.
HOW DOES CROWN LENGTHENING WORK?
Prior to the crown lengthening procedure, local anesthesia is administered to the targeted areas to enhance your comfort. You can also discuss alternative sedation options with Dr. Anita Jhangiani during your initial consultation to help you feel at ease throughout the process. Once your mouth is ready, the dentist will carefully remove small portions of gum tissue to gradually expose more of your enamel, sculpting the gumline for a balanced appearance. After the treatment, the dentist will seal the soft gum tissue to control any bleeding and then clean your mouth. Following your crown lengthening treatment, you may experience some soreness and swelling. Cold compresses and over-the-counter pain relievers are typically effective for alleviating discomfort, but we may also prescribe antibiotics and/or pain medication if necessary. It might be beneficial to stick to a liquid or soft food diet while your mouth heals.
