Aesthetic Crown Lengthening
WHAT IS AESTHETIC CROWN LENGTHENING?
Aesthetic crown lengthening is an oral surgery procedure that can enhance the health and appearance of your smile. Crown lengthening may be a confusing name to some since it sounds like it entails making the tooth longer. A more precise term is crown exposure because gum tissue is excised to show more of the enamel. You may want crown lengthening for aesthetic reasons if you'd like to improve a "gummy" smile. It can also be needed if not enough of your tooth is visible to support a filling, crown, or another restoration. To get more information, schedule an appointment at Cedar House Family Dentistry.
HOW DOES CROWN LENGTHENING WORK?
Before the crown lengthening procedure, local anesthesia is applied to the needed regions to make the process more comfortable. You can discuss other sedation methods with Dr. Anita Jhangiani during your initial consultation to help you feel calm during the procedure. Once your mouth is prepared, the gum tissue is removed in small slivers to slowly show more of your enamel, and then your gumline will be sculpted for an even look. Once the treatment is complete, your dentist will seal the soft gum tissue to stop the bleeding, followed by cleaning your mouth. After your crown lengthening treatment, your mouth could be sore and swollen. Cold compresses and over-the-counter pain relievers can usually be utilized to minimize your discomfort, but we may prescribe antibiotics and/or pain medication. It may be helpful to adhere to a liquid or soft food diet as your mouth heals.
