Bone Grafting
Your jawbone's strength is key to your general oral health. If your jawbone is weakened from missing teeth or physical trauma, you may require a bone graft so your jaw can securely hold both dental implants and your natural teeth. Bone grafting helps to strengthen and rebuild your jawbone so it's healthy enough to support a dental implant. At Cedar House Family Dentistry, dental bone graft surgery is performed to rebuild volume and thickness in your jaw in order to replace weak or missing teeth. Our experienced dentists, Dr. Anita Jhangiani, are highly skilled in performing bone grafting surgery. Schedule an appointment with us to learn more.
HOW DOES BONE GRAFTING WORK?
A bone graft builds up the jaw and prepares you for a dental implant; however, you'll need to be willing to commit time to the process. Some procedures may take several months to complete, but you will get a stronger, healthier jawbone that will support your dental implant, as well as your natural teeth. Your bone graft may be taken from one area of your body, such as the shin, hip, or chin (called an autograft). Once you have been given sedation and local anesthesia, your dentist will prepare the areas being treated and make an incision in the gums to expose the bone. The graft will be attached to your bone along with collagen and proteins that stimulate growth. The gums will be closed with sutures and the area will be cleaned. Over the next six or more months, the graft will bond with your jawbone (osseointegration). Within this time, it is critical to have a good oral care routine with flossing and brushing along with any additional products recommended by your dentist.
