Periodontal Treatment
The methods for treating periodontal disease vary based on its type and severity. Dr. Jhangiani and our highly skilled dental hygienist will assess your condition and recommend the most suitable treatment.
Periodontal disease develops as the sulcus (the pocket between the tooth and gums) becomes filled with bacteria, plaque, and tartar, leading to irritation of the surrounding tissues. If these irritants are not addressed, they can harm the gums and eventually affect the bone that supports the teeth.
If the disease is detected early during the gingivitis stage, where no damage has occurred, Dr. Jhangiani and or our hygienist may suggest one or two routine cleanings. You will also receive guidance on enhancing your daily oral hygiene practices and maintaining regular dental cleanings.
For more advanced stages of periodontal disease, a specialized cleaning known as scaling and root planning (deep cleaning) may be recommended. This procedure is typically performed one quadrant of the mouth at a time while the area is numbed. During the process, tartar, plaque, and toxins are removed from above and below the gum line (scaling), and rough areas on the root surfaces are smoothed (planning). This treatment aids in healing the gum tissue and reducing pocket depths. Additionally, your dentist may suggest medications, medicated mouth rinses, and an electric toothbrush to assist in infection control and healing.
If the pockets do not improve after scaling and root planning, periodontal surgery may be necessary to reduce the pocket depths, making it easier to clean the teeth. Our Doctor and staff at Cedar House Dentistry may also recommend a referral to a periodontist, a specialist in gum and bone health.
