Fluoride Treatment
Often a component in most general dental health programs, fluoride is a beneficial substance present in select foods and liquids. However, it may also be painted topically onto the enamel to offer several oral advantages. Fluoride can safeguard from cavities by allowing the teeth to be less vulnerable to buildup. It can also reinforce the tooth's framework to help reverse the initial stages of cavities. At Cedar House Family Dentistry, we happily perform professional fluoride services for children and adults of all ages. To learn more about how fluoride could enhance your dental wellness, schedule an appointment with Dr. Jhangiani's hygiene team.
WHAT TO EXPECT WITH FLUORIDE TREATMENTS
At Cedar House Family Dentistry, fluoride treatments are usually recommended twice-yearly soon after a professional cleaning and annual dental exam. When your flavor is selected, we will apply the fluoride varnish. It is usually kept on the enamel for 1 – 4 minutes in order to give the fluoride enough time to penetrate your teeth. To attain the best possible advantages from your fluoride session, you may need to wait at least 30 minutes before eating or drinking beverages. Though these treatments help to fight tooth decay, it is still worthwhile to brush using fluoridated pastes and rinses every day. We also advise that you attend biannual dental exams and thorough cleanings so Dr. Jhangiani can check your complete dental health.
Although most patient's receive fluoride from food and water, sometimes it is not enough to help prevent decay. Your dentist or dental hygienist may recommend the use of home and/or professional fluoride treatments for the following reasons:
-
Deep pits and fissures on the chewing surfaces of teeth.
-
Exposed and sensitive root surfaces.
-
Fair to poor oral hygiene habits.
-
Frequent sugar and carbohydrate intake.
-
Inadequate exposure to fluorides.
-
Inadequate saliva flow due to medical conditions, medical treatments or medications.
-
Recent history of dental decay.
Remember, fluoride alone will not prevent tooth decay! It is important to brush at least twice a day, floss regularly, eat balanced meals, reduce sugary snacks, and visit your dentist on a regular basis.
