Fluoride Treatment

ABOUT FLUORIDE TREATMENT

Fluoride is an essential component of most general dental health programs, known for its numerous oral benefits. This beneficial substance is naturally found in certain foods and liquids, but it can also be applied topically to strengthen tooth enamel. Fluoride helps protect against cavities by making teeth more resistant to plaque buildup and can even aid in reversing the early stages of tooth decay.

At Cedar House Family Dentistry, we proudly offer professional fluoride treatments for both children and adults of all ages. If you're interested in learning more about how fluoride can enhance your dental wellness, schedule an appointment with Dr. Jhangiani's hygiene team today!

WHAT TO EXPECT WITH FLUORIDE TREATMENTS

At Cedar House Family Dentistry, fluoride treatments are typically recommended twice a year, following professional cleanings and annual dental exams. After selecting your preferred flavor, the fluoride varnish is applied and left on the enamel for 1 to 4 minutes, allowing the fluoride to penetrate the teeth effectively. For optimal benefits, it’s advised to wait at least 30 minutes before eating or drinking after the treatment. While fluoride treatments are instrumental in combating tooth decay, it’s essential to maintain a daily routine of brushing with fluoridated toothpaste and rinses. Regular biannual dental exams and thorough cleanings are also crucial for Dr. Jhangiani to monitor your overall dental health.

While most patients receive fluoride through food and water, there are instances where this is insufficient to prevent decay. Your dentist or dental hygienist may recommend home and/or professional fluoride treatments for the following reasons:

  1. High Risk of Cavities: If you have a history of cavities or other risk factors for dental decay.
  2. Orthodontic Treatment: Patients undergoing orthodontic treatment may benefit from additional fluoride to protect their teeth during alignment.
  3. Dry Mouth Conditions: Individuals with dry mouth (xerostomia) may need extra fluoride as their saliva production is insufficient for natural protection.
  4. Enamel Erosion: If you have conditions that cause enamel erosion, fluoride can help remineralize weakened areas.
  5. Special Needs: Children or adults with special health needs may require additional fluoride to maintain oral health.
